To prevent the Angel-controlled Unit-00 from attacking, Rei self-destructs her Evangelion, destroying Tokyo-3, but later reappears without memories of the event, calling herself "The Third." It is revealed that Rei was born from the Evangelion that killed Yui, and Ritsuko's mother killed the first Rei, who was created by Gendo as a replacement for Yui. Kaworu, an Angel controlled by SEELE, tries to befriend Shinji but is ordered to attack NERV and seek Adam, only to discover that the Angel within NERV is Lilith. Misato sends Shinji to kill Kaworu to prevent a Third Impact, and although Shinji follows through, he is deeply saddened. After Kaworu's death, the Angel attacks stop, but SEELE invades NERV to kill Gendo, leading to a confrontation with JSSDF troops and the release of the Mass Production Evangelions, which Asuka battles successfully.
